Getting rid of Shang?! And replacing him with a bully? Oh but don’t worry, he’ll magically stop harassing her once her realizes his rival is a girl.
Newflash, the people I’ve known like that never stop. If anything, it makes them angrier when they find out they were tricked.
Getting rid of Mushu? Getting rid of the songs? Adding magic? You are basically taking every reason why people loved the original animated movie and going “Don’t need that.” This will flop. You are alienating your main demographic. And also not gaining another potential one: people who wanted to see a more accurate version of Mulan.
I’ll be honest: what you’ve done with this story feels like one of two options. Neither are good.
1) Your screenwriter(s) can’t fathom writing for a non-Western story and thus are adding in Western fairy tale elements to make it less Asian. Which isn’t a good look since it’s quite possible, nay probable, Mulan actually existed and that is part of why people love this story.
2) Your screenwriter(s) thought that this wasn’t mystical enough to be from Asia. So they thought adding in magic would make it feel more Asian. Which is kinda racist.
Also in a Your Mileage May Vary moment, some people view Shang as bisexual. If you buy that, then nice job erasing the bi man. Bisexual erasure…
You may have seen these fliers going around on social media and just to be safe I’m warning you all that this is false. It was posted maliciously on reddit and spread around to get undocumented immigrants to disclose their documentation status. Likely thinking that some would get reported on or whatever intentions that were had here.
It’s spread so much that Starbucks even sent out memos to all their stores about this rumor. Spread the information that it is FALSE.
